Trap to Half Court Drill

The following is from Jim Harrington, IBCA Hall of Fame Coach:

Trap to HC 001

• A-B double team the inbounds pass
• A-B trap all over the backcourt
• #1 looks for an open area to receive a pass from #1
• Once the pass is made, A-B trap the ball
• Action stops when the ball crosses half court

Trap to HC 002

• Same action as before but B starts out guarding the inbounder

3 on 3 Random Movement Drill

The following is from Scott Miller, Head Boys Basketball Coach, Glenbard East High School (IL):

3 on 3 Random Movement Drill

• Coach sets the ball down anywhere on the floor
• Offensive players position themselves anywhere on the floor
• Defensive players get set in proper defensive position
• On “play!” by coach, offense runs motion offense while the defense adjusts accordingly
• On “freeze!” by the coach, offense stops and coaches check for proper defensive positioning

Notes:
• Can go 3 on 3 or 4 on 4
• Have coaches in practice coach a particular player on defense

Memphis Closeout Drill

The following is from Chris Snyder, Head Boys’ Basketball Coach, Lakes High School (IL):

Memphis Closeouts 001

• Defender x1 starts with the ball and passes to x2.
• x2 passes to x3, x3 to offensive player 1 as x1 sprints to close out on 1.

Memphis Closeouts 002

• x2 and x3 close out on 2 and 3, respectively, as the ball is swung around the perimeter.
• On the first pass, from 1 to 2, x1 jumps to the ball.
• On the second pass, from 2 to 3, x1 sprints to mid line.

Memphis Closeouts 003

• The offense reverses the ball again, with defenders allowing the passes and working on positioning.
• x3 jumps to ball then sprints to midline, x2 jumps to ball, x1 closes out.

Memphis Closeouts 004

• Play live 3-on-3 from here with an emphasis on forcing the dribbler whichever direction your defense dictates.

3 on 3 Closeout Drives

• Coach passes to one of the offensive players (O’s), who catches and drives.
• The defenders (X’s) all close out with proper technique to correct position.
• Play live to a score or a stop

Note: Add back cut if defense over plays or add a jump shot if he is late

• #1 passes the ball to #2
• All three defenders jump to the ball
• #2 drives
• x3 helps on the baseline drive and takes a charge
• x1 covers down

• #2 kicks the ball out to #1
• #1 passes to #3
• The defenders rotate on the passes

• #3 drives to the baseline
• x2 helps on the drive and takes the charge
• x1 covers down

Drill: 3 on 3 Sprint to Help Closeouts

• Three players along the sideline start with basketballs
• Three defenders are guarding them
• Two coaches act as passers and move the defense with their actions

3 on 3 Sprint to Help Closeouts 002

• The coach passes the ball
• On the airtime of the ball, the three defenders sprint to the helpline and get in the proper position and stance

3 on 3 Sprint to Help Closeouts 003

• When the ball is passed back to the other coach, the defensive players closeout to their men with the proper technique
• Repeat several times

4 on 4 Help and Recover Drill

• 1 pass (G – G)
• 2 Passes (G – G – F)
• 3 Passes (G – G – F – Skip)
• Offensive players drive a seem and try to score
• Xs help and recover
• Coach enters ball to the guard.
• Execute set number of passes and add a live element
• No convert and convert segments
